Meet The PetFirst Pet Insurance Team: Fran Mitchell, Claims Manager

Fran Mitchell - Claims Manager at PetFirst Pet Insurance

Your name:  Fran Mitchell

How long have you been working at PetFirst:  2.5 years

Pets at home (name, age, species, breed):  Peanut, 12, dog, Beagle

What is your role at PetFirst?  I am the Claims Manager, which means I am responsible for ensuring the claims are processed in a timely manner and according to the Underwriters and Department of Insurance regulations for each State.   I have a team of five Vet Technicans who are educated in the field of Veteraniarn medicine.  They all love pets and take great pride in making sure each claim is processed accurately.  They sometimes become emotionally involved in some of the claims and have formed friendships with some of the policy holders.

What did you do before working at PetFirst Pet Insurance?  Operations Manager at Connextions.  I managed 250 licensed Insurance Agents who sold Medicare Advantage Plans for United Health Care and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.  I have worked with Underwriters and Insurance regulations for many years.  My education is in Accounting but over the years I have gravitated to the processing of claims and managing a team that cares about taking care of the customer.

What attracted you to come work at PetFirst?  I first worked with the CEO and the Founder of the company at another company.  I helped them test the software system and take the first phone call for PetFirst.   I know several other people who work at PetFirst and knew it would be a great place to work….and I was right.  PetFirst has a “work hard/play hard” mentality.   Everyone is like family and we have a good time while we are at work.

What is one of your favorite things about working at PetFirst?  My ability to impact change and to have my ideas heard.  Because our company is headquarters and call center are located in the same building, I have access to talk to the CEO and other managers to work on improving and affecting change to give our policy holders the best experience possible.  I also enjoy the cultural that is encouraged here at PetFirst.  I am a member of the Super Duper Fun Time Squad.  This squad is made up of people from each department in the company and we plan events to bring the Fun into the workplace.  But fun is not the only thing that makes up cultural at a work place,  you also have to have an environment that makes each employee want to come to work and enjoy work by being able to have an impact in how the company evolves.  With our Core Valves of Do the Right Thing, Drive it Own It, Think Big, Show up with your “A” game and Bring the Fun this is what allows PetFirst to be a great place to work.

What is your ultimate dream job?  To be a beach bum.  I would love to be able to get up each morning and walk the beach to see the sunrise.  Then in the evening walk the beach to see the sun set.  I love the sound of the ocean and would love to be able to have a job that allowed me to be at the beach all the time.

What is your life motto?  Change is good, if you don’t try a new way how will you know it could have been the best way.

What was your first pet, and what was their name?  I had a dog named Snowball that I would share my snack with every afternoon.  My mom said I would take a bite of my cookie then give Snowball a bite then I would take another bite.

Are you a dog or a cat person?  Dog

If you were an animal, what type of animal would you be and why?  One of my dogs or at least owned by someone like me that treats their dog like it is a baby.  I have always had dogs in my life and they have always been treated as members of the family.  None of our dogs knew that they were dogs.  Even my friends today will only whisper the word dog around my beagle Peanut because he does not think he is a dog.

What is your most memorable animal or pet experience?  When we were flying to Turkey we had our Pekinese – Pee-Wee in a crate that was red and white and could hold a Labrador.  When the plane started to take off we saw that the crate was still sitting on the run way.  Me and my brothers starting screaming and running for the doors. In the Turkish community dogs are considered edible.  The stewardess got the pilot to stop and we pointed to the crate and they loaded him up and off we went.

If you’re not working, where can you usually be found?  At home, out eating or out shopping.
